Our Program:

Started in 2014, and by 2015, AIS fully transitioned to a platform of Apple devices across the entire Elementary and Secondary Schools. This move was based on extensive research during the preceding year and demonstrated a deeper vision for IT across the whole school.

Given this vision, the School has committed to a program that lifts AIS to the status of a 1:1 technology school from Prep in Elementary to Year 12 in Secondary:

  • 1:1 iPad program for all Elementary students (school provided)
  • 1:1 MacBook program for all Secondary students (BYOD)

To mirror the learning device in their classrooms, Elementary and Early Years teachers are using an iPad as their central teaching device, whilst Secondary teachers use MacBooks. In addition to which, the School has a mapped professional development path for our teaching staff, which is supported by Apple.

The Elementary School 1:1 iPad Program

Students in Prep - Year 5 are provided with access to their own iPad for use during the School day.  The iPads provide students with access to innovative programs and Apps which are carefully chosen to complement the PYP Units of Inquiry and are used within the class to enrich learning.

A technology fee is payable to cover the rental of the iPad, and yearly technical support applies to each student.

The Secondary School 1:1 MacBook Program

Every student is required to possess a MacBook Air for use during their time at school. Students bring their own MacBook (BYOD) that aligns with the school's minimum requirements. It is important to note that iPads remain prohibited, with only MacBooks being permissible for use within the Secondary section. Furthermore, please be aware that each student is limited to connecting a single device to the school's WiFi network.

Bring your own device (BYOD)

  • The student (family) provides their own MacBook Air.  Other MacBook models are acceptable if they meet the minimum requirement.  Windows laptop is not allowed.
  • The technology fee provides IT support for students throughout the year.
  • The student (family) is responsible for arranging their own personal insurance against loss/damage/theft. The School is not responsible for items damaged/lost/stolen on school property.
  • The laptop must be dedicated to the student for school use and learning.  It must not be used or shared as an entertainment device, home device, or for any other purpose.
  • The School will have the right to supervise the laptop use.
  • The School will install school-licensed Anti-virus software and MDM (mobile device management) software to help support the BYOD devices. This MDM will automatically generate an administrative profile for the IT department, enabling the pushing of any required apps to the laptops.
  • Please be advised that BYOD devices should have any existing freeware antivirus, and VPN software uninstalled, and their usage should be discontinued.
  • The laptop’s Device Name will be renamed to the school’s naming convention.
  • All school-licensed software that has been installed will be removed if the student (family) chooses to leave the school. Students will be required to report to the IT department for the uninstallation process.

What are the specifications for a BYOD?

Acceptable Device and MacOSMinimum Specification
Macbook, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro (any model running at least OS Ventura 13)M1 Processor, 8 GB RAM, 128 Gb SSD
Unacceptable MacOS versions as these will not recieve software patches from Sophos (School Anti-Virus)
macOS High Sierra
macOS Big Sur
macOS Catalina
macOS Mojave
macOS Monterey

What are the extra things I need to purchase for a BYOD laptop?

Protection from water spill - The most cost-effective protection you can give the laptop is a silicon keyboard cover. This, more than anything, will prevent most liquid spills from reaching the internals, usually a disastrous situation for MacBooks.  Apple will void the warranty when water damage is detected.

Soft or hard shell covers - Prevent damage to the computer case.  It will also prevent everyday wear and tear, though little can be done to protect against drop damage.  Apple will void the warranty when the computer case is damaged.

Extended AppleCare from Apple - helps to protect against any electronic failure (not due to misused) - motherboard, screen, etc.

Do you have a BYOD-preferred supplier?

We do not have a preferred BYOD supplier, but our Apple resellers are happy to provide discounted devices to our AIS students.

As this reseller does not have a retail shop, interested students and parents can check out their education portals for pricing and procedure for purchasing the devices:

Alternatively, BYOD laptops can be purchased from Apple Store in Singapore or the Apple Online Store. Please click HERE for the online store for Apple Education.

BYOD devices can be purchased at any time between now and the beginning of the school year but must be ready for students to use from Day 1 of school.

BYOD devices need to meet minimum standards to be accepted into our ecosystem.

I am still unsure which option is best for me; who can I talk this over with?
